Editor’s note: Hey, hey! Our team at Blackwood has launched a podcast called The Big Brand Theory! This episode, our host, Ryan Zerfas, spoke with Michael Yoder of Truth Work Media about the very activity they were engaged in: podcasting. If you’d prefer to listen to the episode and hear all about podcasting, you can do so at this link. Enjoy!!

Podcasting absolutely exploded just a few years ago, and it has not slowed down since. Nowadays, all kinds of people are podcasting – including us – and it’s proving to be a great asset to businesses in multiple different capacities. It can be a challenger to tackle podcasting; there are so many different moving parts, and it definitely requires some planning, but it’s totally worth it when done to its fullest potential. Let’s talk about all things podcasting.

According to Michael Yoder, the three cardinal focuses of podcasting for businesses are consistency, content, and audio quality.

Whatever you tell your audience you’re going to do, you have to do it. Well, duh. What we mean, though, is that podcasting is harder than it looks, and you’ve got to set a reasonable expectation for how often you’re going to upload. If you want to have a biweekly podcast and advertise as such, you better be uploading every two weeks if you want any chance at success. Though that sounds harsh, it’s true – people need consistency if they’re going to keep coming back. Managing your commitment level early on will be extremely beneficial in the long run.

As far as content is concerned, you want to make sure you’re genuinely adding value to the market you’re entering. Don’t disappear into the rest of the noise. Additionally, planning out your content is another humongous part of successful podcasting. From pre-choosing topics (and pre-recording episodes) to scripting your episodes, there are a lot of ways to streamline and organize your podcasting process.

Finally, audio quality is an obvious important aspect of podcasting. Investing in good quality equipment will benefit you in the long run; not only will you spend less money replacing cheap, faulty equipment, but you’ll be able to utilize that equipment to improve the quality of your other content (or even start sharing new types of content).

If you’re going to get into podcasting, get into it with at least one other person.

It may not seem like it at first, but podcasting requires a lot of organization. You’re responsible for creating and maintaining the platform where your episodes are published, editing episodes, scripting episodes, recording episodes, scheduling guest appearances, promoting new episodes…the list goes on (and on…and on). Whenever possible, try to have more than one person in charge of the podcast. It’ll probably put a few years back on that person’s life.

Having guests is a great way to structure your episodes.

Guests are always super fun to have on a podcast! There is so much you can learn from guests from just about every industry, and it’s definitely a great way to bring value to your episodes. When you do bring on guests, however, there is some more organization that you have to keep in mind. Make sure your guest is fully prepared for recording day – and on that note, make sure you’re fully prepared, too! The brunt of the work should never fall on the guest; after all, they’re supposed to be the guest. Make it as easy for them as possible while still allowing them to be the expert. You brought them there for a reason!

Reap all of the benefits of podcasting!

Michael Yoder and Ryan Zerfas will both be the first to tell you how much of a blast it is to podcast. (Hey, that rhymed!) You learn so much from every experience, and even though it’s a good amount of extra work sometimes, it’s absolutely worth it. The conversations are super valuable for all parties involved, and it’s beneficial for so many reasons.

Overall, if you’re considering podcasting, definitely consider it from all angles. Of course, we’ve had a great time with ours, but it’s not for everyone. If it’s something feasible for your business, give it a try and let us know how it goes! We’d love to give it a listen.
