We all know it. Most of us love it. It’s hard to remember what life was like without it. That’s right, folks – “it” is Facebook! Simultaneously a social media app and marketer’s dream tool, Facebook has changed the game for so many industries. It’s easier than ever to stay connected, and the platform just keeps growing…but why does it matter so much to people in business and marketing? Here are just a few best practices for Facebook as you get started.

How did Facebook start, and how did it get to where it is today?

Facebook’s success story is absolutely incredible. Back in 2004, Mark Zuckerberg saw a need on Harvard’s campus for students to be connected; he started Facebook with the goal of helping students get to know each other and network for their future careers. Though it started originally as a way for only college students to connect, the platform started to explode and evolve into a platform for people of all ages.

Nowadays, there are over 2.7 billion active monthly users on Facebook – so it’s grown just a little bit since it began! Despite the privacy concerns which have been brought up, particularly in the recent Netflix release, The Social Dilemma, the platform has flourished for years as a network for people to stay connected – even in different countries.

As the platform has grown and become a place for advertisers and marketers to reach their clients’ audiences, people have begun to develop some best practices for Facebook. Because it is constantly changing and being updated, the best practices also tend to change with the software.

There are a few best practices for Facebook that apply fairly consistently.

1. Audit your own social media profiles from time to time.

Because of its ever-changing nature, social media requires constant upkeep; things go out of style really, really quickly nowadays. That means you should be checking your entire profile (or all of your profiles, on every platform!) multiple times throughout the year. This can range anywhere from just ensuring all contact and team member information is still correct to completely redoing your Instagram feed to match a different theme. Staying current will keep you at the forefront of your industry – and your audience’s minds.

2. Set up your account as a business page and optimize it completely.

When you create a business page on Facebook, you are given access to a ton of tools you wouldn’t see if you only created a personal profile. You have the ability to see analytics, advertise your business, and provide extremely valuable information to the entire world (almost literally…there are so many people on Facebook.). Take advantage of 100% of the tools you’ve been given!

We toss around the word “optimization” all the time, but it can be difficult to grasp if you’re still relatively new to the concept. Optimizing your Facebook page includes checking your “about” section and keeping it up to date, keeping your social links usable, and make sure your links are all still relevant and working. Last but certainly not least, check your grammar. People pay attention to how well you’re speaking and using punctuation; the better you do, the more positively people perceive your brand!

3. And the cardinal of all best practices for Facebook: only share content that is truly relevant to your audience.

Shareable content is the absolute number one key to success on Facebook, and a lot of it just comes down to showing restraint. In other words, refrain from posting content just to post content. People can see right through that, and they’ll be less likely to engage. Instead, focus on only putting out relevant, valuable content that your audience will want to share. “Quality over quantity” is the name of the game here!

Additionally, if you’re going to be sharing links to other sites, make sure you’re only sharing relevant content from a trusted, fact-checked source. Don’t contribute to the noise; instead, focus on bringing value to your audience in every post.

Facebook is a monster of a platform, and there’s no way we could fit all of the information into one podcast episode, much less one blog!
