Social media is an ever-evolving world of its own. As with most worlds, there is a set of rules (both spoken and understood) across social media dictating what can and should be posted on which platform. This can differ depending on the lens you’re looking at – performance, aesthetic, or otherwise…all that to say, there’s a lot going on with social media! One of the foundational parts of understanding your business’s social media presence is determining what content belongs on which social platform. Let’s break it down!

But first…there are 3 social media platforms that every business must have.

Because of the way technology has advanced, it is extremely important to have an online presence for your business. Even if most of your business isn’t done online, it’s a great way to allow people to find your business and learn more about you. Social media is a very important marketing tool, and you’re missing out if your business isn’t on there! The three non-negotiable social media platforms to use for your business are Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Coincidentally, those are three of the most popular social media platforms, not to mention ones that are integral to marketing strategies! Let’s get into it.

Facebook is a great place for curated content for a range of audiences.

Facebook is perhaps one of the most versatile social media platforms for businesses. Because of the immense size of the platform (as of early 2020, there are over 2.6 billion active monthly users) it can be a great tool to grow your audience. Additionally, there is a broad range of ages present on Facebook. If your business has a few different target demographics, this would be a great platform to advertise and post on; the amount of people you’ll be able to reach will definitely result in an increase in conversions.

As far as content goes on this platform, you have several options that can be equally effective. Because of the Live feature, you can stream live videos to your audience to announce events or discuss a topic, or post pre-recorded videos of gatherings or conversations. Post photos from a recent event, new product you’re working on, or a new employee. Graphics are great to post when you want to give quick information to your audience!

There are so many different things you can post. The main thing to keep in mind is that this is a way for people to connect with your business. Ensure that the content you’re putting out is high-quality and represents your brand positively, and that it appeals to the right type of people.

Instagram is mostly built for photo and video content.

Instagram is most well-known for being “the picture app,” so it makes the most sense to post your photos on there! There are so many different things you can post pictures of – it’s seriously difficult to mess this up. If your business sells physical products, it’s even easier to figure out what to post photos of on your business’s Instagram!

Even if you don’t sell products, you can still post high-quality photos of your team members, your office, a project your business completed, a graphic with information about an upcoming event…the list could go on forever!

Instagram isn’t just for photos – go ahead and throw a video up there if you have it. Additionally, by utilizing the Stories feature, you can share an even wider range of photo and video content. Stories give you the capability to post photo collages, quotes, videos, looped videos (called Boomerangs), and so many more.

LinkedIn is the platform for all things professional.

LinkedIn is the ultimate professional networking platform, and it’s absolutely imperative that your business is on it! If nothing else, it’s a great way to discover and get connected to businesses and individuals in your local area.

One of the most logical things to post about on LinkedIn is job opportunities with your business. Though it’s not necessarily a hiring website, it is absolutely possible (and encouraged) to find great candidates for your open positions!

On top of that, though, LinkedIn is a great place for company announcements such as hirings or promotions. It’s also a great place to showcase your connections with other companies; if you’ve collaborated for a project or put on an event together, show it off! It’s great to show off your networking efforts on your business’s profile. That type of content is what will really draw people to check out your business!
