Previously, we’ve discussed video content a fair amount. We’ve talked about IGTV, the return of long-form videos, and how to go about making high-quality video content on a budget. However, we haven’t really looked at what makes good video content. While this can vary a bit from business to business, there are definitely a few key pieces of information to keep in mind.

1. Have a clear and consistent message.

When you’re filming a video, it can be easy to go off on tangents instead of sticking to the topic at hand. There is a sweet spot in the middle of reading from a script and rambling, and while it can take some time to figure out, practice makes perfect! The most important part about creating good video content is sticking to your message.

Whether you’re trying to bring on new clients, advertise a promotion or event, or share a part of your business’s daily process, it’s best to focus on one topic instead of jumping between several. With long-form video content, you have a bit more leeway when it comes to how much information you can cover. However, if your content is jam-packed with a million different tidbits, your audience likely won’t remember most of what you said. Keep your message simple, give the necessary information, and expand on it later if you so choose.

2. Create video content that encourages conversions.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to include a call to action in your videos! No matter what message you’re trying to get across, make sure to give your audience an incentive to engage with your business. Tell your viewers about the awesome newsletter you send out, offer a discount on one of your products or services, or simply emphasize how great it is to work with you instead of your competitors. That way, you’re not only telling people how awesome your business is, you’re giving them more of a reason to create a working relationship with you and your team.

3. Don’t post low-quality video content!

Let’s be real: if it looks like you filmed your video in the darkest corner of the room, it’s not going to perform well. Don’t fret; this doesn’t mean you have to invest in expensive filming equipment and install a studio in your office. (Unless, of course, that’s something you want to do anyway.) Smartphones are amazing tools for content creation! Whip out your smartphone, stand in a well-lit area, and get your message out there. It really is as simple as that! 4. Be personal & approachable. Encourage audience engagement!

Allow your video content to give your audience a glimpse of who you are as an individual or brand. This can be as simple as smiling during your video! People are likely to want to talk to and work with businesses whose team members are approachable – show that side of you in your video marketing. A great way to encourage your viewers to engage with your content is to ask them a question. Then, they can comment their answers, and they’ll feel great knowing that they’re being heard by your brand. Plus, a video could be the viewer’s first impression of your business, so make sure you’re portraying a positive image for yourself and your brand.

If you’re new to creating video content for your business, keep in mind that it takes some time to find your groove. Don’t let that deter you, though; according to Forbes, 64% of customers say that a video makes them more likely to consider buying a product or service. Your audience is out there – it’s time to reach them!
