With all the craziness going on in the world today, people are turning to many different platforms to help them continue to work remotely. Perhaps one of the most successful and widely talked about platforms is Zoom. This platform is not only catering to students who have been displaced from their campuses, but also to business professionals all over the country. So, what is Zoom, and how can you be using it during this time?

What is Zoom?

Essentially, Zoom is a video conferencing platform similar in ways to Skype or Oovoo. They offer large-scale video meeting capabilities, allowing up to 100 individuals on one call with the free version or 500 individuals with the large meeting add-on. Currently, Zoom has one of the largest capabilities of all video conferencing platforms. It works equally well for smaller and larger groups!

Why is this platform so valuable right now?

Although so many businesses have closed their doors for the pandemic, the need for meetings has not diminished. If anything, it’s gotten stronger as businesses figure out how to proceed during this critical time. Having a resource like Zoom with the sole purpose of providing that meeting space is incredibly valuable. You may not be able to go out and meet face to face at a coffee shop, but you can absolutely grab a mug and sit down for a video meeting.

How can using Zoom benefit your business?

Zoom is a great resource for businesses because it helps you to stay connected with your colleagues. While Slack and other messaging platforms are incredibly helpful, there’s something irreplaceable about a face-to-face (or screen-to-screen) conversation. During this time where in-person meetings are near impossible, it’s great to have a platform to make this period of a time a little more bearable. Zoom allows people to communicate effectively while working remotely, and it can help businesses run a lot more smoothly.

Are there any best practices for this platform?

There have been some reports of “Zoom-bombing” in which people infiltrate Zoom calls and say offensive things or post offensive images. However, there are some security precautions you can take to avoid having this happen. First of all, make sure you’re only sharing your meeting link with the intended audience. This will help manage who can and can’t join, and can secure your call more effectively. Additionally, the meeting host can opt to have members join a waiting room before joining the call, allowing the host to manually admit people into the video call. Above all, just make sure you’re keeping your call as private as possible to maximize the efficiency of the call and your team as a whole.
