It’s official: you exist on social media. You’ve created your username and added your bio to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Now what?
The perfect username and a well crafted bio may qualify you as existing online, but no one’s gonna know you do until you put yourself out there. It’s time to post!
Now what to post?
Think of your brand new social media page as a crisp, clean sheet of paper and you’re holding a permanent marker. Any spot you create with that marker is, well… permanent. It’s important you know what you’re doing with the marker before you start marking up your pristine sheet of paper.
The Creation Process
There is a process to creating just the right first (and ultimately every) post. It’s a standard to live by. And, I’ll be honest, it takes work. But there’s no point in marking up your fresh, new social media presence if you aren’t going to do it right.
Here’s what you do:
- Know your audience. Hopefully you already know the audience you’re planning to reach, but if not, figure that out first. Then find that audience out in the wild and study them. Learn their language. Take note of what photos or videos they interact with or post themselves. Don’t worry, this isn’t cyber stalking. It’s market research. Totally different things.
- Learn how to take photos. Whether it’s with a high-quality camera or your high-tech phone, the picture you post needs to look good. It should both appeal to your audience and represent the truth of who you are. Use editing apps like Lightroom or VSCO that help novice photos look pro while creating a cohesive theme for your page.
- Create content. The final piece of the posting puzzle. You’re not just writing a caption, you’re creating a caption. The photo you plan to post will be the eye-catching glitter that nabs the attention you’re looking for, but the caption seals the deal. The caption either solidifies or destroys their impression of you. At this point, you know your audience. If they’re young scrollers, always on the move, give them a caption that is short and valuable. If your crowd is looking for deeper information or likes to stop and smell the roses once in awhile, bulk up the caption a little but with equally valuable content.
The Perfect Post
Our 3-step process seems easy enough. But a perfect post every time? That takes effort. It takes commitment. Your social media presence is serious business. It’s no place for shortcuts or laziness.
