Without designers, the world would be an incredibly boring place! Whether they’re designing logos, signs, or business cards, they’re an integral part of the business world. However, sometimes designers are given the short end of the stick. Many times, people expect designers to be superhuman, even though they’re just like the rest of us. Here are a few things you should never say to designers.
“Oh, it’s easy. You’ll do it super quick.”
Just like the photo above illustrates, people often seem to think that designers simply press a button, and bam! A beautifully crafted design appears. However, this is not the case at all. Each design is carefully created to the client’s specifications, and as such, this takes some time. While many designers have quick turnaround times, it’s unfair to put the expectation onto them that they’re able to get it done by the end of the day. Giving reasonable deadlines allows designers to take their time to make you happy, and that’s their goal! Help them help you by allowing them to create to the best of their ability.
“You know how to do this, right?”
Designers put a lot of time and effort into their training. Whether they’ve received a degree in design, taken certification classes, or trained themselves for years, they’ve put a lot of work into their career. If they’ve accepted the job you’ve given them, they definitely know how to do it. They wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) have agreed to it if they didn’t, so allow them the space to work on your design. Their goal is to make the client happy, and that’s what they strive for. Let them make you happy!
“Can you actually also do this, this, and this?”
If you’ve commissioned a designer to create a logo for you, they’ve given you a price specifically for that project. After they’ve finished the logo, if you want business cards or envelopes with your logo as well, don’t expect them to include those in the quoted price. The logo itself takes time to create, and all the time and labor is included in the price you were given. Any additional products will cost more, as they should! Designers can’t be expected to work for free; their time is precious for each project they’re working on. Therefore, expect to pay for any additional products. That’s more work for them, and they deserve to be compensated for it.
“Make it pop.”
In the words of Blackwood’s designer, Jony Chagas, “what does this even mean?” There’s no button on any keyboard that says, “make it pop,” because there’s no across-the-board definition for what this entails. This could mean anything from the color, to the background of what the logo is being put on, to the text within the logo. If you want your logo to “pop,” please be specific when talking to your designer. Are you looking for bright colors? They’ll be happy to make that happen for you! Plenty of contrast within the logo itself? Absolutely! Just tell your designer exactly what you’re looking for, and they’ll be more than happy to accommodate.
All in all, designers are people, just like you. Their work is tremendously important, and they’re here to make your business or brand look really great. Be kind and patient with your designer, and they’ll make you proud with what they create!
